Environment Commissioner delighted with Building Code changes

Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Dr Jan Wright is delighted with the move toward more energy efficient buildings outlined in yesterday's announcement on changes to the Building Code.

For too long New Zealand has looked simply at increasing the supply of electricity through new power generation, she says, so the focus on the demand side of energy is a very positive step. Energy savings by households and commercial buildings under the new regulations will ease the pressure to generate more power.

"The improvements that result will be good for the environment, for people's health, and for their power bills," said Dr Wright.

The government announced on 3 May that the Building Code and Building Compliance Documents would be altered to provide for new insulation requirements for new homes, easier installation of solar water heating systems, and more energy efficient lighting in commercial buildings.
